Since moving to Muskoka, I had been hearing about this place called Torrance Barrens Trails and Dark Sky Reserve. I knew it was a great place to go for night viewing of stars, meteor showers, etc, but had no idea that there were hiking trails there as well. My dear friend Nicole came to visit me in Port Carling. I was so happy she was here with me and we decided to go for a [...]

I had been wanting to adventure in Killarney all summer but every time I had a free weekend, the park was booked up.  When I checked a few weeks ago, I finally saw a few openings.  They were all with portages but after carrying my lil kayak over 3km's in Algonquin each way a few weeks ago I figured a kilometer was totally doable and something I wouldn't have an issue with. Since booking my site on [...]

When my friend and fellow blogger  Joyce asked me if I wanted to do a trip to Scorch Lake with her, I said yeah! When she told me there were 3 portages totaling over 3 km's, I said ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!  I mean, I paddle a kayak, not a canoe, and I have portaged my small kayak,  but never that far. I suggested we rent a canoe, then I thought about it for the night.  Then [...]

I have always wanted to get up to Brent in Algonquin but it was always way to far for me to go. Now that I live in Muskoka, the drive is the same as what I used to drive to get from Niagara to Hwy. 60 in Algonquin, 3.5 hours, so I figured it was time for a visit.  I had made some plans to go camping with a friend that weekend but she got [...]

Since moving to Muskoka and making the drive to Bracebridge for groceries and supplies, etc, I have noticed a sign along highway 118 that says Huckleberry Rock Trail, but until today, I had not investigated it.  I was really glad I did because it's a pretty nice place! It was the day of the Tragically Hip concert, their farewell show in Kingston. I had originally had plans to go camping with some friends but things [...]

Have you ever gotten lost in the forest in the middle of the night? On a recent trip in the backcountry, it happened to me! I have been debating for a few weeks now if I would actually publish this post. In the end, you can see who won the battle because here I am telling the story to you. As many of you know, last spring I applied for Canada's Dream Job with Woods Canada.  The contest brought forward almost 4000 applicants and out of those people, I sadly was not chosen.  Melba Seto and Adam Kochanek were chosen and they were absolutely awesome! I followed along with the Woods Explorers every step of their journey and was so involved, Woods even sent me a set of Woods Explorer shirts for myself and my mom [...]

Decew Falls is named after John DeCou, who purchased the land in about 1788, buying 100 acres with an axe and an indian blanket. In 1812 he purchased the land along the top of the escarpment from his newly built stone house to Decew Falls.  During the war of 1812, DeCou served in the Lincoln Militia and his home served as headquarters by the British where Laura Secord brought news to in June of 1813, of a potential [...]
