Last year I had the great privilege of being invited to Mew Lake for New Years Eve Camping.  It was one of the best New Years Eve's I've ever had! I met some extraordinary people who I've spent time with over the past year and enjoyed camping in the snow more than I thought I would. This year, I was incredibly honored to be invited to my friend Stevie's wedding, happening on New Years Eve [...]

It is a time of year when one must be really careful going out on the water.  I often receive comments of concern, people calling me brave,  and others blatantly stating I am unsafe, careless and should not be doing what I'm doing.   What if you fall out of your kayak?  You will freeze instantly!!! I have been kayaking for over 15 years of my life.  In that time, I have never, not once, [...]

Last year I went on my first solo trip in the backcountry. It was at The Massasauga and it was awesome and I have been wanting to go back. I had every intention of spending last weekend at home.  Well my new home in Port Carling, but on Friday around 1pm, I was advised I could go home early.  So at 3pm, I decided to call it a day and packed up my camping gear. Family day weekend boasted record low temperatures in Ontario.  I decided to go camping at Mew Lake in Algonquin Park, in a summer tent, and at -42, it was a rough but surprisingly fun weekend.  There were many  circumstances that brought me to the Winter in the Wild Festival in Algonquin Park,  as I was expected at Macgregor Point Provincial Park.  Unfortunately, neither of my camping partners could make the trip, leaving me with two [...]

Last night after many weeks of indecisiveness, I finally purchased a new backcountry sleeping bag.  My first backcountry bag was purchased in 2001 and has lasted me all this time, which I find incredible!  I did pay about $210 for the original bags. They are Jack Wolfskins and are super light. i think they were about 2lbs and were rated -5 but don't quote me on that as I got them a very long time [...]
