It has been far too long since I camped and I was dying to go!!!  A few events, some sickness, a visit from mom, and some bad weather had kept me from doing what I love most and this weekend was turning out to be the same. I wanted to cry! Originally, the weekend plan was to do a canoe trip on Rain Lake at Access #4 on the west side of Algonquin Park.  But, [...]

Decew Falls is named after John DeCou, who purchased the land in about 1788, buying 100 acres with an axe and an indian blanket. In 1812 he purchased the land along the top of the escarpment from his newly built stone house to Decew Falls.  During the war of 1812, DeCou served in the Lincoln Militia and his home served as headquarters by the British where Laura Secord brought news to in June of 1813, of a potential [...]

While staying in a yurt at Mew Lake with my mom, we met a park ranger who had just come from working at Silent Lake. He told us all about the park and that he highly recommended us paying it a visit.  I had heard a lot about Silent Lake but had never been there so I was appreciative of the information and decided to look into it further when I got home. A few weeks [...]

While camping at Mew Lake during Winter in the Wild, my sitemates and myself decided to go for a hike to Starling Lookout. We packed up our backpacks and ourselves as it was a balmy -22 (better than the -42 we'd been through already) and headed out on the trail. We didn't take our snowshoes as we'd been told all the trails were well packed and they weren't needed. I was bummed but no point [...]

Family day weekend boasted record low temperatures in Ontario.  I decided to go camping at Mew Lake in Algonquin Park, in a summer tent, and at -42, it was a rough but surprisingly fun weekend.  There were many  circumstances that brought me to the Winter in the Wild Festival in Algonquin Park,  as I was expected at Macgregor Point Provincial Park.  Unfortunately, neither of my camping partners could make the trip, leaving me with two [...]

I spent some time at Arrowhead Provincial Park snowshoeing a few sundays ago and I had waited months to do it.  Now that I had, it seems I am addicted.  And it wasn't only the snowshoeing, but the winter wonderland I had done it in.  The problem is, where I live, there is barely any snow, definitely not enough to go snowshoeing in and not even close to a winter wonderland.  The only solution I could come [...]

Once upon a time, I hated winter ...but then I decided to embrace it. I bought a pair of snowshoes from my favourite place Outdoors Oriented , Elektra's made by Atlas Snowshoe Compamy. Then, I waited, but the snow didn't come! I went winter glamping twice, but it wasn't cold enough for the ice to freeze to skate on, it wasn't snowy enough to snowshoe and cross country skiing wasn't even an option.  I was ready, [...]

Judging by my name, Camper Christina, it's safe to say I love camping. What my name doesn't say is that I hate the cold and am not a huge fan of snow!  As I have been strictly a 3 season camper, I have never had the need for a winter tent, which in addition to cold and snow, is a big reason I didn't think I would ever go winter camping.  Regardless of that,  I [...]

Somehow the thought of winter camping never occurred to me.  For one, I hate the cold, and for two, I don't really care for snow.  Every year when winter arrives, I hibernate along with many other warm weathered canadians who enjoy the other 3 seasons, but know that winter is a time to catch up on movies, tv series, cleaning the house, indoor DIY projects, etc.  But this year, somehow that changed.  I had been [...]
