Last year I went on my first solo trip in the backcountry. It was at The Massasauga and it was awesome and I have been wanting to go back. I had every intention of spending last weekend at home.  Well my new home in Port Carling, but on Friday around 1pm, I was advised I could go home early.  So at 3pm, I decided to call it a day and packed up my camping gear. I got off work at 5 and had a plan to go paddling on Lake Joe aka Lake Joseph which is across the street from my new residence.  Last year I had received a kayak cart as a regift from someone but the tires were flat so I'd never used it.  A few months ago, I had my truck in for service and had my mechanic fixed the tires, so it was now ready to [...]

I've wanted to retake my kayaking course for some time now. I guess I should say 'retake' lightly as the first course I took in 2004 was not a certificate program through Paddle Canada and was only an 8 hour course, but, I did learn quite a few of the items that were on the list for the Paddle Canada Sea Kayaking Level 1 course. A few weeks ago I began researching a few places [...]

Since my very first backcountry trip in 2002 I have been carrying a compass in my backpack on every single trip I go on.  You would think that would make me smart, but the reality is, I have never learned how to use a compass. I was never in girl guides or scouts or brownies or participated in any type of class or course to show me how to use this amazing instrument. I have [...]

I got off work right at 5 with the intention of heading to Hardy Lake for a hike.  I packed my backpack the night before and when I finished for the day at the office, I walked over to my bedroom (lol), grabbed my backpack and off I went! Hardy Lake Provincial Park is about 20 minutes from my new home. I actually came to visit it the day of my job interview, but knowing [...]

My dad provided me with the perfect word to describe the last few weeks, bittersweet.    It seems no matter how good something is, there is almost always something bad that goes along with it. It also depends on if you choose to see it, or just focus on the positive.  When things in your life have been really good and people have been great to you, you can't help but get sad when you [...]

Decew Falls is named after John DeCou, who purchased the land in about 1788, buying 100 acres with an axe and an indian blanket. In 1812 he purchased the land along the top of the escarpment from his newly built stone house to Decew Falls.  During the war of 1812, DeCou served in the Lincoln Militia and his home served as headquarters by the British where Laura Secord brought news to in June of 1813, of a potential [...]

Not adventuring for someone like me is difficult.  Whenever I have a spare hour or two, or more, I start thinking of a place I can run off to and explore it.  But sadly, time for me,  doesn't always allow that.  Suprisingly to people who know me and are on my facebook, especially, think blogging and adventuring is my full time job.  This,  is actually not a job at all, it is what I do [...]
