While camping at Mew Lake during Winter in the Wild, my sitemates and myself decided to go for a hike to Starling Lookout. We packed up our backpacks and ourselves as it was a balmy -22 (better than the -42 we'd been through already) and headed out on the trail. We didn't take our snowshoes as we'd been told all the trails were well packed and they weren't needed. I was bummed but no point [...]

With months of anticipation, the day had finally come!  The Outdoor Adventure Show was in Toronto and I was ready to go! By recommendation of my friend at Ontario Trails, this show was a great place to network and meet contacts and with my blog CamperChristina.com still in it's first year, I wanted to make the best impression possible. I contacted my friend Stacey to help me design a logo, which would be used to put [...]

Family day weekend boasted record low temperatures in Ontario.  I decided to go camping at Mew Lake in Algonquin Park, in a summer tent, and at -42, it was a rough but surprisingly fun weekend.  There were many  circumstances that brought me to the Winter in the Wild Festival in Algonquin Park,  as I was expected at Macgregor Point Provincial Park.  Unfortunately, neither of my camping partners could make the trip, leaving me with two [...]

Several people who walked past the site I was staying on at Mew Lake, Family Day Weekend, said that it looked like a little village. This got me to thinking about it, and the differences betwen winter camping vs the remaining seasons.   When you're camping in winter it really is just like we are all part of a small village.  There is a great feeling of community among all of the campers.  We are all temporarily living in [...]

Arrowhead Park-Winter Wonderland Day Trip – Skating Skiing & Snowshoeing-AWESOME!

Once upon a time, I hated winter ...but then I decided to embrace it. I bought a pair of snowshoes from my favourite place Outdoors Oriented , Elektra's made by Atlas Snowshoe Compamy. Then, I waited, but the snow didn't come! I went winter glamping twice, but it wasn't cold enough for the ice to freeze to skate on, it wasn't snowy enough to snowshoe and cross country skiing wasn't even an option.  I was ready, [...]

How to build a Tipi! CamperChristina style!

Somehow the thought of winter camping never occurred to me.  For one, I hate the cold, and for two, I don't really care for snow.  Every year when winter arrives, I hibernate along with many other warm weathered canadians who enjoy the other 3 seasons, but know that winter is a time to catch up on movies, tv series, cleaning the house, indoor DIY projects, etc.  But this year, somehow that changed.  I had been [...]

If someone had told me a year ago that I would go winter camping, or glamping, in this case, I would've said they were crazy.  Up until this year, it has never crossed my mind to even attempt adventuring in the snow, and now I have done it and am actually even camping in a tent for my next two trips!  Being in nature in the snow is truly magical and I now understand why [...]

Bon Echo – owls, coyotes & whipping winds!

I have been hearing about the great Bon Echo Provincial Park for many years now.  I had wanted to explore it and seeing as I had a free weekend in September and a willing and eager camping partner, the time to visit there had come! I did my best to research Bon Echo but other than the Ontario Parks Website and a few posts here and there, I couldn't find a whole lot.  I contacted Bon [...]

In 2002,  I completed my first backcountry trip in Algonquin Provincial Park.  It was awesome and I was immediately hooked!  Over the years, I have completed approximately 25 backcountry trips and have loved every single one of them.  I have gear to both backpack into the backcountry, or paddle in to sites, however, I much prefer the latter as it is a lot less work! I love the solace of the backcountry but do not need [...]

My 1st solo trip- The MassasaugaPP – Afraid of the dark!

It's funny the reactions you get from people when you tell them you are going on a solo backcountry trip! I'm not 100% sure if it's because I am female, or just because people don't really understand what spending time in nature does for your soul? From the very first time I went backcountry camping in 2002, I was hooked! On that trip I was in for 5 days and stayed on 4 different lakes. [...]
