Last year, I had the privilege of being invited to shadow the kayaking courses at the Women on Water Paddling Festival.  It was great fun and I learned so much. When I was asked to come back again this year, to teach basic kayaking, I agreed wholeheartedly and couldn't wait for the event to arrive. I left off in Part 1 with the sun setting on Saturday.  This post begins on Sunday with a whole [...]

When I was asked to come back again this year, to teach basic kayaking, I agreed wholeheartedly and couldn't wait for the event to arrive. It had been a rough year for me so far. I hit my head on January 3rd and received a [...]

I have always wanted to take a canoe skills course but just never got around to looking up the info and actually committing fully to doing it.  A few months ago my friend Sam sent me a message to advise she wanted to take hers also and had found a good course with Judy Kirkwood of Kirkwood Canoe in Huntsville.  She sent me all the details, I checked out the info and told her I [...]

Making Maple Candy – Eventually

When I finally finished making my maple syrup I was incredibly proud. I was also really happy, that it was over.  It was a very very long process as far as the boiling went and I know that was due to my inadequate heat source but it didn't make it any less long. I was about to close the book/blog/video on the whole maple syrup series, until a friend, Terry Thomas commented on my facebook [...]

This post is Part 2 of Making Maple Syrup, to see Part 1, click here.   After 13 days of collecting sap, I was ready to try and turn it into maple syrup.  Please see Part 1 for the collecting maple sap blog post. I had a few buckets that were still frozen solid or had a big chunk of ice in them, so I got out the big pot, filtered the sap that was in [...]

I have always been curious about how maple syrup is made.  Every year around this time, my boss says, you should make maple syrup and blog about it, but I have always been too busy out on trips and hikes and exploring to give it a go. I guess I should therefore thank my concussion for this years test run.  I have been unfortunately spending a lot of time at home and as the trees [...]

Ever since my first trip with Kevin Callan, The Happy Camper, in June of this year, there has been a challenge set forth for Kevin the (mostly) canoeist to go on a kayaking trip with me.  Our second trip over the Canada 150 long weekend, brought us canoeing once again, but I was promised a kayaking trip at some point and I was going to make sure it happened, no matter how short or the location. [...]

When my kayaking coach Dympna from Ontario Sea Kayak Centre, asked me to consider auctioning off a weekend of camping with me, for the Women on Water Paddling Festival silent auction, I thought she was off her rocker. The auction was very successful and proceeds went to the Georgian Bay Biosphere, a great organization that takes care of a place I love to play in and it is a good cause.  I agreed to proceed, [...]

Before taking my Level 1 Sea Kayak Instructor Course with Ontario Sea Kayak Centre, my coach Dympna had asked me to attend the Women on Water Paddling Festival.  I had no idea what this festival was all about and had not heard of it until she'd mentioned it. I did a bit of research and it looked like a really cool weekend that had been created by Wild Women Expeditions and Ontario Sea Kayak Center, [...]
